3 Days Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

3 Days Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park

The 3 days gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a journey into the heart of nature, brimming with awe-inspiring encounters and unforgettable memories. Nestled in the southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers. This pristine park, part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, is home to the endangered mountain gorillas and offers a unique opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The trip typically includes a pickup from a hotel, a day of gorilla trekking of the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family and a transfer back to the airport.

What to expect?

  • Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Day 2: Trek through the park in search of gorilla of the Nyakagezi gorilla group
  • Day 3: Transfer back to Entebbe Airport

Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga

Your journey begins with your arrival in Kampala or Entebbe International Airport. After a brief orientation with your tour guide, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Mgahinga National Park. The journey, though long, is filled with picturesque views of Uganda’s rolling hills, lush greenery, and vibrant local communities.

Along the way, you will make a stop at the equator for a photo opportunity and to learn about this geographical marvel. As you approach the southwestern region, the landscape transforms into a dramatic display of terraced hills and volcanic peaks. The drive culminates in Kisoro, the nearest town to Mgahinga, where you’ll check into your lodge for the night. After a hearty dinner, you’ll retire early to prepare for the adventure awaiting you the next day.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure

The highlight of the trip begins early in the morning. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Here, you’ll learn about the rules and etiquette of gorilla trekking to ensure a safe and respectful encounter with these gentle giants.

Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you’ll venture into the dense rain forest in search of the Nyakagezi gorilla family, the only habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. The journey, though challenging, is immensely rewarding. You’ll traverse steep slopes, cross streams, and navigate thick vegetation, all while soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the forest.

When you finally encounter the gorillas, you will spend a magical hour observing their behavior. Watch as they feed, play, and interact with one another in a display of familial bonds that mirror our own. The experience is humbling and deeply moving, leaving a lasting impression on every visitor.

After the trek, you’ll return to your lodge for lunch and some well-deserved rest. Later, you can opt for a cultural tour to the Batwa community. The Batwa people, also known as the “keepers of the forest,” are the original inhabitants of the region. Through storytelling, dance, and demonstrations, you’ll gain insights into their traditional way of life and their connection to the forest.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Departure

On your final day, you’ll embark on another thrilling adventure: trekking to see the golden monkeys. These endangered primates are endemic to the Virunga Mountains and are known for their striking golden-orange fur and playful demeanor. The trek is less strenuous than the gorilla trek but equally captivating as you follow these agile creatures through the bamboo forest.

After the golden monkey trek, you’ll return to the lodge for an early lunch before beginning your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive back offers another opportunity to relish the scenic beauty of Uganda, often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa.”
