6 Days Chimpanzee Habituation and Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda
Discover Uganda’s remarkable primates and wildlife on this exciting 6 Days Chimpanzee and Gorilla Habituation Experience Safari. Starting from Entebbe or Kampala, this private safari takes you to Kibale Forest National Park for an extended chimpanzee habituation experience, Queen Elizabeth National Park for a wildlife game drive and Kazinga Channel boat cruise, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the extraordinary Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Unlike standard chimpanzee tracking, which provides a shorter visit with a habituated chimpanzee community, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience allows visitors to spend an extended period following chimpanzees that are gradually becoming accustomed to human presence. Accompanied by authorised researchers, trackers and guides, you will learn about chimpanzee behaviour, social interactions, feeding habits and the conservation work involved in habituation. The exact duration and arrangements depend on the activity booked and the applicable park regulations.
Your journey continues to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where a morning game drive introduces you to Uganda’s savannah wildlife, followed by a boat cruise along the wildlife-rich Kazinga Channel. You then travel to southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the highlight of the safari: the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows up to four hours of observation with a designated mountain gorilla group once it has been located, subject to official rules and conditions.
This six-day itinerary is ideal for primate enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, conservation-minded travellers and adventurous visitors who want to experience two distinctive habituation activities alongside Uganda’s classic savannah wildlife.

Detailed 6 Days Chimpanzee and Gorilla Habituation Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Kibale Forest National Park
Your Uganda primate adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Meet your professional driver-guide and set off towards Kibale Forest National Park, travelling through Uganda’s countryside, local trading centres, farmland and rolling green landscapes.
The drive takes much of the day, depending on your starting point, traffic and stops. Along the way, you may see roadside markets, tea-growing areas, local communities and the everyday activities that make rural Uganda so distinctive.
Kibale Forest National Park is internationally recognised for its rich primate diversity and is one of Uganda’s leading destinations for chimpanzee experiences. Its tropical rainforest provides habitat for chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and several other primate species.
Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch or refreshments, depending on your arrival time. If time permits, you may arrange an optional guided visit to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-supported conservation area known for birdwatching and opportunities to see some of the region’s wildlife. This activity is optional and should only be included if the transfer schedule allows.
Spend the evening relaxing at the lodge, enjoying dinner and preparing for the following day’s Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. Your guide will explain the arrangements, what to pack and the expected start time.
Accommodation: Lodge near Kibale Forest National Park.
Meals: Lunch and dinner, depending on departure time and package arrangements.
Main destination: Kibale Forest National Park.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest and Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Rise early for breakfast before proceeding to the designated briefing point for your Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest National Park.
Following the briefing, you will enter the forest with authorised personnel and begin the day’s search for a chimpanzee community undergoing habituation. Unlike a standard chimpanzee tracking excursion, which focuses on locating and observing an already habituated community for a shorter period, the habituation experience involves spending an extended period following chimpanzees as they move through their natural habitat.
Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and social primates. Their daily activities may include searching for food, feeding on fruit and other vegetation, grooming, resting, communicating and moving through the forest canopy. Observing these behaviours provides insight into their social relationships and the challenges involved in studying and protecting wild chimpanzees.
The experience also offers a closer understanding of the habituation process. Researchers and trackers monitor the chimpanzees and gradually familiarise them with human presence under controlled conditions. Visitors accompany authorised personnel and must follow all instructions to avoid disturbing the animals.
Because the chimpanzees move freely through the forest, the route, walking conditions and behaviour observed will vary. The experience may involve extended walking over uneven or muddy trails, so comfortable hiking boots, suitable clothing, drinking water and a reasonable level of fitness are important.
After completing the habituation activity, return from the forest and arrange lunch according to the day’s schedule. The duration of the activity should be confirmed when booking, because the full-day habituation experience can make this a demanding day.
Later, travel towards Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey takes you through western Uganda’s scenic countryside, with rolling hills, crater lake landscapes and rural settlements along the route. Depending on the activity’s finish time and road conditions, you may arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or evening.
Check in, enjoy dinner and relax ahead of the following day’s wildlife activities.
Accommodation: Lodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, subject to the activity schedule and selected package.
Main activities: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Important planning note: This is a full and potentially tiring day. Confirm the exact duration of the chimpanzee habituation activity and the feasibility of travelling to Queen Elizabeth National Park afterwards. If the activity finishes too late for a comfortable transfer, the itinerary may need an adjustment, such as an additional night near Kibale or a revised activity schedule.
Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
After breakfast, head out for a morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most diverse wildlife destinations.
Depending on your lodge’s location and the conditions of the day, your guide may take you towards the Kasenyi Plains or another suitable game-viewing area. These open grasslands support Uganda kob, buffaloes, elephants and other wildlife. Lions and other predators may also be encountered, although sightings depend on natural animal movements and cannot be guaranteed.
Your guide will help identify wildlife and explain how animals use the park’s different habitats. Early morning is often a rewarding time for game viewing because many animals are active before temperatures rise.
Return to your lodge for lunch and a short rest before heading to the Kazinga Channel for an afternoon boat cruise.
The Kazinga Channel connects Lake George and Lake Edward and is renowned for its concentrations of wildlife along the shoreline. From the boat, you may observe hippos in the water, Nile crocodiles resting along the banks, elephants visiting the water’s edge and buffaloes grazing nearby. The channel also attracts a wide range of waterbirds, making it an excellent setting for birdwatching and wildlife photography.
The boat cruise complements the morning game drive by offering a different perspective on Queen Elizabeth National Park’s wildlife. After the activity, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Accommodation: Lodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Main activities: Morning game drive and afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise.
Day 4: Transfer to Southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, depart Queen Elizabeth National Park and travel towards southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for your Gorilla Habituation Experience.
The journey takes you through southwestern Uganda’s beautiful countryside, including cultivated hillsides, rural communities and changing landscapes as you approach the mountainous region surrounding Bwindi.
Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient rainforest and endangered mountain gorillas. The forest’s steep slopes, thick vegetation and network of trails create a distinctive environment for primate encounters.
For this safari, accommodation should be arranged near the confirmed Gorilla Habituation Experience meeting point in southern Bwindi. The Rushaga and Nkuringo areas are particularly relevant when planning habituation activities, but the exact sector must be confirmed for your permit date before selecting the lodge.
You can learn more in our guide to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, alongside our pages about the Rushaga sector and the Nkuringo sector.
On arrival, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner and rest after the road journey. Your guide will review the following day’s arrangements, including the departure time, documents, clothing and other preparations for the forest activity.
Accommodation: Lodge near the confirmed habituation starting point in southern Bwindi.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, according to the selected package.
Main activity: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Day 5: Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today is the highlight of your Uganda primate safari: the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
After an early breakfast, proceed to the designated briefing point. Authorised park personnel will explain the activity, conservation guidelines, safety requirements and expected conduct around mountain gorillas.
You will then enter Bwindi’s rainforest with the authorised habituation team. The walk can be physically demanding, as trails may be steep, muddy, slippery or uneven. The time needed to locate the gorillas varies according to their movements and the conditions in the forest.
Once the designated gorilla group has been located, visitors may spend up to four hours observing the animals, subject to the applicable rules and conditions. This extended viewing period distinguishes habituation from standard gorilla trekking, which generally allows up to one hour with a gorilla family.
During the encounter, you may observe gorillas feeding, resting, grooming, moving through vegetation and interacting with other members of the group. You will also learn about the work involved in habituating mountain gorillas and the role of researchers, trackers and conservation personnel in monitoring these endangered primates.
The experience is conducted under official guidance. Visitors must follow instructions about viewing distance, noise, photography and other measures intended to reduce disturbance to the gorillas.
After completing the permitted observation period, leave the group under the direction of the authorised team and return from the forest. The overall activity can take much of the day, depending on the location of the gorillas and the walking conditions.
Return to your lodge for lunch or refreshments and spend the afternoon resting after this remarkable wildlife encounter.

Day 6: Return to Kampala or Entebbe
Enjoy breakfast at your lodge before beginning the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.
The road trip passes through southwestern Uganda’s highlands, rural communities and agricultural landscapes before continuing towards central Uganda. Stops for lunch and refreshments can be arranged along the way.
The return drive is long and may take approximately nine to eleven hours or more, depending on your starting point, destination, traffic, road conditions and weather. It is best to keep the remainder of the day flexible.
If you are connecting to an international flight, share your flight details before confirming the itinerary. Depending on your departure time, an additional night near Entebbe or a suitable domestic flight arrangement may be advisable.
On arrival, your driver will drop you at your hotel or another agreed location, marking the end of your six-day Chimpanzee and Gorilla Habituation Experience safari.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch, according to the selected package.
Main activity: Return transfer to Kampala or Entebbe.
End of safari.
Important Note About This Six-Day Itinerary
This itinerary combines two extended primate experiences, a Queen Elizabeth game drive and a boat cruise within six days. It is possible to plan the route, but Day 2 is particularly demanding because the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience can occupy much of the day before the transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Before confirming the safari, check the availability and timing of the chimpanzee habituation activity, Gorilla Habituation Experience permit, accommodation and road transfers. If the schedule does not allow a comfortable transfer on Day 2, adding a night or extending the safari may provide a more relaxed experience.
